Benefits of Greenery In Your Workspace
Filling your workspace with greenery has more benefits than aesthetics. Sure, they look GREAT, but green spaces not only calm people, which is especially important in high-stress environments, but they also purify the air and promote productivity amongst workers.
It’s no secret that we’re lovers of all things green, but this blog will further explore why we’re supporters of bringing life into your spaces.
The colour green, yes the literal colour, has calming effects on our brains. Green’s gentlest effects involve the parasympathetic nervous system where, in layman's terms, the colour green mellows you out.
A study by the University of Technology in Sydney in 2010, found that there was a significant reduction in stress amongst employees when plants were brought into the work arena. Their results included a 37% reduction in anxiety and tension, more than a 50% drop in depression, a 44% decrease in hostility and anger, as well as a 38% reduction in tiredness.
More often than not, we find ourselves in office spaces that are cycling the same air - this can lead to lethargy and dehydration. On the flip side of this, extensive studies show that indoor plants act as an air filtering system by removing contaminants from the air, making the work environment that much healthier. To back this, a 2015 report by Human Spaces studied 7,600 office employees in 16 countries and found workplaces that have plants reported a 15% higher rate of wellbeing.
It has been shown that plants in workspaces could help to raise levels of productivity by up to 15% [Medina, 2021]. When people can see a plant from their work area, it psychologically engages them to their space, this leads to positivity towards their work, boosting productivity.
“Simply enriching a previously spartan space with plants served to increase productivity by 15 percent—a figure that aligns closely with findings in previously conducted laboratory studies,” lead author Marlon Nieuwenhuis told Science Daily.
