Growing Your Own

Growing your own food and becoming more self-sufficient is more important than ever. Not only do you get to enjoy watching your food grow, but you know exactly what you’re eating, you’re not at the mercy of big chains who decide costs and you have the freedom to eat fresh, every day. We’re also big believers that fresh, living plants taste much, much nicer than mass-grown, well-travelled ones.

We've all noticed the sudden increase in fresh produce prices this year. Recently, especially across the East-Coast of Australia, we’ve seen exceedingly unpredictable weather patterns. Devastating floods have halted fresh produce across the country, throw in a global pandemic and supply shortages of fuel, fertiliser, packaging and labour - we’ve seen produce costs increase by up to 400%, whilst supply is down by 80%.

Growing your own, using a Herb Urban System, keeps you safer from the devastating weather patterns - our systems are built to withstand wild weather - they will push up extra food and water in the heat and will drain excess water if they become saturated due to excessive rain.

Growing your own significantly reduces your food miles. If your ingredients are a long way away, it’s likely that they have a heavy carbon footprint. Food miles represent the distance a food travels from its source, for example the farmer who grew or produced it, to you, the consumer who finally eats the food. According to the Environment Protection Authority (EPA), the food we eat makes up 28 percent(!!!) of our ecological footprint.

By growing your own herbs and vegetables, you’re reducing the distance that your food has travelled. From thousands of kilometres down to a few steps across your house.

Over time, the nutritional value of vegetables declines. When you consider the time it takes for produce to go from the farm to your plate, it’s easy to see that herbs and vegetables grown in your own garden have a higher nutritional value.

Not only is the nutritional value higher, growing your own will give you motivation to eat more fresh food, rather than store bought, processed foods.

How We Can Help

Growing your own can be a real challenge, considering the points made earlier plus the steep learning curve which home gardeners find themselves coming up against.

We’ve done the learning, and have created a system that does all the hard work for you. Your own Herb Urban garden will water and feed itself as required whilst sending growth data back to us in HQ, so you can sit back and enjoy fresh food at the fraction of the time, effort and space of a traditional garden.
